What Are Banana Rolls (Under Butt Fat)?

Banana roll fat refers to the stubborn layer of subcutaneous fat that accumulates in the space between the lower buttocks and upper thigh. This type of fat is notoriously difficult to eliminate and can significantly impact the aesthetic appearance of the buttocks.

Definition and Appearance

Banana rolls are situated at the junction where the glutes meet the upper thighs, creating a curved roll of fat that can disrupt the smooth transition from buttock to thigh. In severe cases, the presence of banana rolls can make the buttocks appear misshapen, contributing to a saggy and untoned look. This can be particularly noticeable from a side angle.

Impact on Aesthetics

The presence of banana roll fat can make the buttocks appear less firm and saggier, undermining the overall appearance of the gluteal muscles. This accumulation of fat can alter the natural curvature of the buttocks, affecting both the front and side profiles.

How Does Banana Roll Fat Develop?

Understanding the underlying causes of banana roll fat is essential in devising an effective plan to eliminate it.

Accumulation Over Time

Like other forms of fat, banana rolls develop as a result of the body storing excess calories as fat. This accumulation typically occurs gradually, influenced by various factors such as lifestyle and metabolic rate.

Contributing Factors

  • Excess weight: Carrying extra weight increases the likelihood of fat deposits forming in various parts of the body, including the banana roll area.
  • Normal aging: As we age, our metabolism slows down, and our body’s tendency to store fat increases. Additionally, skin loses its elasticity, which can exacerbate the appearance of banana rolls.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Hormonal changes and weight gain during and after pregnancy can contribute to the development of banana rolls.
  • Sedentary lifestyle: Lack of physical activity can lead to muscle atrophy and increased fat storage, particularly in the lower body.
  • Genetic Predisposition: Genetics play a significant role in determining where our bodies store fat. Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to accumulate fat in the banana roll area, regardless of their overall fitness level.

How to Get Rid of Banana Rolls

Although challenging, it is possible to reduce and even eliminate banana rolls through a combination of diet, exercise, and potentially medical treatments.

Diet & Exercise

Subcutaneous fat, which makes up banana rolls, is located beneath the skin and is more resistant to reduction compared to visceral fat, which surrounds internal organs. Despite this resistance, targeted efforts in diet and exercise can help diminish subcutaneous fat.

Diet: A balanced diet that is low in fat and high in protein can aid in fat loss. Focus on consuming whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains. Avoid processed foods, sugary snacks, and high-fat meals which can contribute to fat accumulation.

Exercise: Combining cardio exercises with strength training is essential for overall fat reduction and muscle toning. Effective exercises that target banana rolls include:

  • Squats: Help to tone and strengthen the glutes and thighs.
  • Donkey Kicks: Focus on the gluteal muscles and help reduce fat in the banana roll area.
  • Hamstring Curls: Strengthen the back of the thighs and contribute to a more toned lower body.
  • Bridge Walks: Target the glutes and hamstrings, improving muscle definition.
  • Deadlifts: Engage multiple muscle groups including the glutes, hamstrings, and lower back.

Non-Surgical Options

For those who find that diet and exercise are insufficient to eliminate banana rolls, non-surgical treatments like CoolSculpting can be effective.

  • CoolSculpting: A non-invasive procedure that uses controlled cooling to freeze and eliminate fat cells. Benefits include no pain, no surgery, and no downtime, making it a convenient option for many. CoolSculpting can be combined with CoolTone, a non-surgical muscle strengthening and toning treatment which uses magnetic muscle stimulation to strengthen and tone the glutes, enhancing the overall results.

Surgical Options

For individuals with moderate to severe banana rolls, surgical intervention may be the most effective solution.

  • Liposuction: Liposuction is a procedure where fat is surgically removed from specific areas, offering a precise and controlled way to contour the body. Results are typically immediate and can significantly improve the appearance of the buttocks and thighs.
  • Fat Transfer: This technique, sometimes called a Brazilian Butt Lift, involves harvesting fat from the banana roll area, purifying it, and re-injecting it into the buttocks to enhance shape and volume.

Banana rolls can be a frustrating aesthetic issue, but with a comprehensive approach involving diet, exercise, and possibly medical treatments, it is possible to reduce or eliminate this stubborn fat. By understanding the causes and implementing targeted strategies, you can achieve a smoother, more toned lower body. Whether through lifestyle changes or advanced procedures, there are effective solutions available to help you achieve your body goals.

Hi, can i get liposuction to remove banana rolls even if i’m am fairly thin?

      Hi Antoinette,

It is possible to still get liposuction in the area for those who are fairly thin, as long as there is a sufficient quantity of fat to remove. As always, the final determination would have to be made during an in-person consultation/assessment.

If you are in Texas, please feel free to give us a call to schedule a free consultation!

      Thanks,
